SILENT NIGHT MUSEUM HALLEIN

LIFE AND WORK OF THE COMPOSER FRANZ XAVER GRUBER

The Silent Night Museum Hallein presents the career and works of Franz Xaver Gruber – composer of the world-famous Christmas carol. It furthermore tells the (hi)story of “Silent Night”. Working as a choir master and organist, Gruber lived for 28 years in these rooms formerly belonging to the sacristan and now housing the museum. The display includes original furnishings from the apartment of F. X. Gruber, drawings and watercolours by the composer, and the guitar Joseph Mohr played in 1818 at the first performance of the carol in Oberndorf. There is also the Silent Night Archive housed on the first floor, including three autographs of the composition “Silent Night”, the composer’s diaries and three music inventories kept by Gruber during his time in Hallein.
